Variable: SETUP_RUN_STATES

Whether a run is still going (DW21, item 17).

  • running: the run has not ended. Its checks are a picture of this moment: the ones that have completed carry their results, the one being made is checking, and the ones after it are not_run.
  • ended: the run is whole. Every check carries its final result.

A step whose state is checking has a run that is running. A run that says running on a step that is not checking was interrupted: the service stopped, or the run threw, before it could record how it ended. What it shows is what had completed by then, which is the evidence an operator wants; applying the step again is safe and replaces it.
